education & development director, singer/songwriter
A passionate and joyful advocate for excellence in children’s media, Erica Rabner brings multiple layers of expertise to her work as Rhumba’s Director of Education and Development. A rigorous, analytical researcher with experience applying her knowledge of child development and pedagogy in the field, Erica has helped develop and evaluate content and curricula for some of the best-known children’s programming in television and interactive media. Her dedication to measurable excellence is matched only by the passion and humor she brings to her work as a singer-songwriter, creating fun and meaningful music for children and families.
As a formative researcher, Erica has designed research protocols to test engagement and effectiveness in delivering curriculum goals. Some of her favorite days have been spent testing children’s television with preschoolers and translating her research findings to inform and improve writing and production — as well as impact. Her credits include Sesame Workshop, Nickelodeon, Out of the Blue Enterprises, WGBH, and Boston’s Museum of Science.
While earning her M.A. at Harvard Graduate School of Education's Technology, Innovation and Education program, Erica honed her techniques as the lead child researcher for the Family Creative Learning workshop at MIT Media Lab’s Lifelong Kindergarten Group. She also led the formative evaluation design and implementation for the Museum of Science’s Live Animal Story Time program.
Erica received a B.A. in psychology from Brandeis University, where she developed a strong background in research as a member of the Child and Adolescent Research on Development Lab. She also investigated pro-social behaviors, resiliency, and bullying in support of the Arthur Interactive Media Study. Erica graduated magna cum laude and was elected to Psi Chi, The International Honors Society in Psychology.
Finally, let it be known that Erica has some pipes (as we in the business like to say,) and loves singing soul, R&B, jazz, and contemporary pop. Look for her first EP release of original soulful pop tunes later this fall.
